Unique Business Partnership Raises Money for BC and Alberta Colleges and Universities

Kelowna, BC – Thanks to the success of an innovative business partnership producing custom wines for alumni fundraising programs, Kelowna’s Bounty Cellars Winery is providing financial support for scholarships, grants and resources to nine post-secondary schools in British Columbia and Alberta.

Bounty Cellars Winery works directly with alumni associations at institutions that include the University of the Fraser Valley and Capilano College in B.C. and the University of Alberta and Mount Royal University in Alberta, to produce and package custom, wine cooler for private label wines.

The wines are served at events, sold at campus restaurants and marketed for sale to school alumni to raise much-needed funds.

“We’ve worked with Bounty Cellars for 8 years producing a commemorative wine that celebrates our graduating class and raises money for the Alumni Association’s student awards,” says Nancy Armitage, manager of university advancement and alumni engagement at the University of the Fraser Valley. “ Throughout that time Bounty Cellars has been a great partner, and has helped us build on a important annual tradition.”

In an effort to further support the alumni association fundraising program, Bounty Cellars gives back a portion of sales to each of its partners. The programs have been so successful for the participating schools that Bounty was able to give them back more than $13,500 last year alone.

“We feel it’s important to support the great work our post-secondary schools are doing for students in provinces where we do business,” says Bounty Cellars president Ron Pennington. “If we can produce great wines in beautiful, custom packaging for the alumni association fundraising efforts, and give a little extra something back in recognition of the program’s success, everybody wins!”

Based in Kelowna, B.C., Bounty Cellars is an award-winning, non-land-based commercial winery that produces, markets and sells customized wines and packaging. Bounty Cellars Winery is a leader in custom wine labelling and third party production, and has produced more than 500 labels for a wide range of customers since it launched in 2004.

About Bounty Cellars | What is a Négociant?
THE NÉGOCIANT
Bounty Cellars operates in the tradition of the great French négociant, using the best grapes, juice and wine from throughout the Pacific Northwest to produce a portfolio of some high quality wine fridge for top-quality wines year after year. Current plans are to also import from more distant regions and countries, in an effort to make ever-more pleasing, great value wines for both public and private label sales.

Négociants have operated in France for centuries. Some own vineyards but most don’t. Instead they buy grapes, juice and wines at various stages of fermentation and aging, and the winemakers create house brands to meet the criteria on the label. More than 190 négociant wineries operate in the Bordeaux region alone. Some négociants, such as Georges Duboeuf, have a recognizable house style and have become world famous for their wines. Many négociants also own vineyards. In Burgundy for instance, Duboeuf and Louis Jadot, are the largest owners of vineyards.

The salvation of an industry – Négociants may prove to be the salvation of the premium-price sector of the wine industry. Scientific advances in agronomy and viticulture, and related technology have dramatically raised the quality and consistency of low-priced wines, in an era when the number of boutique-sized wineries and speciality labels have literally exploded world-wide. The marketing and promotional costs associated with a boutique product, if it is to achieve a market identity worthy of the price, is about the same as a label with a production volume 100 times larger.

The paradox is that the scores of new, small-volume wines are entering the market (often former grape growers who used to sell to the majors, but who have cashed-in on breaking up their acreage, selling plots to multiple owners), while the public is amidst a mass evacuation from the premium-priced market. Barrels full of wine that had been destined for $30 a bottle and up retail, are now being drastically reduced in price, selling as Charles Shaw (“Two Buck Chuck”) in the U.S., Yellow Tail from Australia or the litre boxes of Don Pepe in Spain for less than one Euro. Veritable oceans of great wine are flooding the market.

Négociants can build value for a specific label or brand and achieve a standard of quality that can only be delivered from top grapes or outstanding juice and first class winemaking – best wine cooler to buy. Selling this basic stock to a prestigious négociant for a premium price may deliver a better net return without the cost of bottling, labelling, packing, transporting and marketing.
Each client orders from their available vintages and then their label is customized in consultation to create a unique and memorable label. The ones I’ve seen are beautiful.

About Bounty Cellars | Our Winemaker
Todd Moore – Winemaker

Todd Moore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as winemaker for Bounty Cellars. After beginning his more than 20-year career as a cellar hand at Lewis Brothers Winery in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Todd quickly progressed to winemaker and manager there before moving on to positions with Barossa Valley Estate Winery in Australia, Quails’ Gate Estate Winery and Blue Mountain Vineyards in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, and Cherry Point Vineyards on Vancouver Island.

As a passionate advocate for provincial and national wine standards, Todd has taken an active role with the British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI) and the National Committee on Wine Standards, and has worked as a taster on the BCWI’s VQA (Vintner’s Quality Assurance) Panel. Todd’s experiences working with a variety of respected beverage cooler and refrigerator winemakers have helped him develop the ability to create many different styles of wine using a range of traditional and contemporary techniques.
Having a private label on display is a fantastic way to brand yourself and your image. The wine is in prominent locations in the restaurant — a double whammy of visual appeal and fine wine.

Bounty Cellars

The Okanagan Bounty Marketing Group was founded in 2002 (name changed to the Bounty Management Group Inc. in 2004) with a view toward applying mainstream retail packaging, imagery, promotion and marketing techniques and strategies to the blossoming B.C. wine industry. They envisaged evolving a powerful new industry sector not unlike the “négociants” so prominent in Europe. These are often world-known family brands who own few – if any – of the vineyards most dominant within their products, but who obtain their grapes from independent growers and, through the artistry of winemaking, year-to-year consistency, branding, promotion and marketing, often dominate the business.

Bounty received a prized commercial winery licence in 2004. Unlike the “estate” licence which predominantly restricts licensees to their own grape harvest, the commercial licence is far less restricted, permitting the import of wine or grapes for blending, bottling and sales. Bounty’s first wines emerged on the market early in 2005 and several under the Bounty Cellars brand would soon win widespread admiration and prestigious awards. Bounty’s 2007 Pinot Blanc won a Lieutenant-Governor’s award in B.C., one of just 12 wines that year selected for distinction by a panel of expert judges.

In terms of third party production, private brands and our Virtual Vineyard Program, Bounty has created more than 500 labels since 2004. Production for major university alumni associations or large restaurant chains have achieved an impressive sales volume, but the private label enterprise can be as little as a case or two for a one off event, or an elite signature wine for a renowned address.
Having a private label on display is a fantastic way to brand yourself and your image. The wine is in prominent locations in the restaurant — a double whammy of visual appeal and fine wine.

ABOUT US
Bounty Cellars is the house brand of a commercial winery headquartered in the heart of British Columbia’s principal wine-growing region, the Okanagan Valley. In addition to the increasing renown of the varietals and blends bearing the Bounty label, many of which have won prestigious awards, the company prides itself on brands created for customers and third-party investors. Since 2004, the Bounty team have crafted over 400 private labels, unique wines developed for special events of various sizes, restaurant house brands, university alumni associations and similar organizations who have generated impressive wine sales as a value added dimension of their daily business.

The original vision of the company was to model itself after the traditional négotiants of France, who buy the grapes of growers from various regions and subclimates to create world-renowned brands that – as a result of expert winemaking and blending – rarely vary year after year.

THE PRINCIPALS
Ron Pennington – President and CEO

A chemistry graduate of the University of Calgary, Ron’s childhood years had been split between his native Alberta and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Prior to the formation of the Bounty Group in 2002, he spent 22 years with Canada Safeway Limited rising through various middle management positions to become an award-winning Store Manager in several Alberta locations. During his executive years at Safeway, among his head office assignments were projects for Alberta and Canadian operations:

Secret shopper program
GST implementation team
Special marketing projects
Corporate trainer for new managers, with an emphasis upon communication skills, financial analysis and staff training
During both the Safeway era and, more recently, the Bounty years, Ron has served on a succession of Boards, special committees and task forces.

Through personal friendships and initiatives of mutual interest, Ron Pennington became a principal business development advisor during 2010 to the breathtakingly beautiful Sparkling Hill Resort and Wellness Centre, built by the patriarch of Swarovski Crystal, high above the Predator Ridge golf complex near Vernon, B.C. Among the Bounty/Sparkling Hill joint ventures has been the evolution of signature wines under the brand CRYSTAL, with actual Swarovski crystal chips embedded in the elegant labels.

RIVER STREET WINES
Several of Canada’s great family fortunes had their roots in a distillery industry made prosperous during U.S. prohibition. This infamous chapter in the history of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, has now become a high profile tourist attraction. The city earned the nickname “Little Chicago” because of its River Street neighbourhood. The area’s most prominent import, the owner of several local businesses, was Chicago mobster Al Capone.

Speakeasies and entertainment offerings flourished along River Street, many of them owned by Capone and associates. This wine applauds the energy and creativity of today’s Moose Jaw investors and leaders who have made a fascinating anecdote of Canadian history a significant tourist attraction.
